Suggest Remedy For Bed Wetting Problem In Teenager

I am a 17 year old male, that wets the bed nightly. During the day I am completely dry. I have very rarely had a dry night. I am currently using goodnights (I m small) but they are quickly going to be to small. My doctor (last seen 7-8 months ago) knows and keeps telling me I will grow out of it. What sort of protection will be good when the goodnights get to small? Also is there a second opinion on the medical side?

Hello,

It is good of you to come forward and seek help for this problem. Some are too shy to ask for help.

The information you have given me indicates that you have primary nocturnal enuresis(meaning you have never had sustained dryness at night).

Causes for this type of night-time incontinence include:

-Impaired arousal during sleep-the arousal centre in the brain fails to respond to full bladder sensation; adolescents with night-time wetting have diminished arousal during sleep.

-There is a chemical in the brain, that when active, causes the kidney to hold on to water and make less urine, but in some adolescents, this chemical is not working properly.

Therefore the kidney does not hold in as much water and so more urine is produced which can spill out at night. I don't think you ought to wait any longer for your body to correct this problem on its own.

You might wish to find a pediatric urologist to investigate your enuresis. This specialist will probably want to study a sample of your urine.

One last piece of advice: drinking caffeine-containing beverages may make night-time wetting worse.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Arnold Zedd, Pediatrician
