Suggest Remedies For Urinary Retention Post A Surgery

My husband had surgery 12-1. When he was coming out of the anesthesia his bladder did not wake up as quickly. He could not urinate. After a trip to the ER that night, they put a catheter in to give him some relief. He had no infection or fever. He was referred to a urologist and will see him on Friday, 12-9. Today, I see what looks like blood in his urin. He has no fever or discomfort. Should I try to have him see the urologist sooner?
