Suggest Remedies For Persistent Cough, Throat Irritation And Difficulty In Swallowing

I get a hacking cough, have for years, my throat gets irritated, a dry tickly feeling, and I start to cough sometimes for long periods. If I hold my head down or sleep with my neck bent it irritates my throat and I start to cough or sometimes just the feeling of air in my throat when I breath in, especially while lying down, causes me to cough such that I can't sleep. I quit smoking over 30 years ago but the smell of smoke or strong perfumes or such brings on coughing. Also sometimes it feels like my throat is tight and I have difficulty just swallowing.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent cough, throat irritation and difficulty in swallowing which occurs due to upper respiratory infection ( coinfection of bacteria and viral organism).

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist/Pulmonologist once and get it examined. Doctor may order certain test like blood test, throat swab test and chest X-ray to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. Doctor may prescribe proper course of antibiotics along with nasal decongestants and anti inflammatory medications. Sip on warm water and avoid cold carbonated beverages. For now take over-the-counter cough suppressants, or expectorants , which give relief from coughing .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
