Suggest Remedies For Pain In The Shoulders And Arms

Hi, I seem to be experiencing a dull ache in both of my shoulders down into the top of my arms. It almost feels as though I slept wrong but it s both shoulders. I also have some tightness in my chest. I have also experienced numbness in my arms and hands at times. I have been experiencing stress here lately with putting my father in the nursing home, but overall I am a healthy 52 year old woman. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Tightness in the chest can be due to different causes, most often the concern is heart disease. If it is intermittent and occurs with activity and decreases with rest, then it may be related to the heart. If it occurs with rest, then it is not likely due to the heart. If you do have a history of heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes, however, it should be assessed.

Aching of the shoulders may be due to stress unless there is a history of arthritis. Arthritis or any injury of the shoulder can compress the nerves in this area that run to the arm. If this continues, then you should have an x-ray of the shoulder.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
