Suggest Non Surgical Treatment For Back Pain Causing Stabbing Pain In Legs

I have back pain that is leading into my leg. Leg pain is constant and stabbing. This pain has progressively worsened for the past couple of years. I live alone.I eat a balanced and have continued to exercise . I m not overweight but, I feel so lethargic when this pain never ceases. I ve been diagnosed with spinal stenosis and see a pain doctor. I ve had several epidural injections but they don t provide long term relief. The doctor is now referring me to a surgeon. Surgery scares me. Is there any other treatment you would suggest? Thanks, Cindy , age 59

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have back pain causing stabbing pain in legs . Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like , but in your case it seems to me that the symptoms are due to nerve injury , pinched or compressed nerve ( Sciatica ) , which may occur due to your disc bulged problem . I would suggest you to continue exercises , apply hot compresses on back and take proper rest . Consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination . Doctor may order x-ray , CT scan and MRI . Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxant , anti inflammatory and recommend particular type of stretching exercise or physical therapy . Doctor may also recommend surgery in severe disc problem . Doctor may also refer you to neurologist for nerve dysfunction.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

HI
Well come to HCM
I really appreciate your concern, if this is the spinal degenerative disease and indicates the surgery then one has to go for this, till then it can be manage with medicine but it may not be taken for long time, although the neurosurgeon is the final judge for this so better to have word with doctor hope this information helps.
