Suggest Medication To Reduce Tinnitus

My husband suffers from severe tinnitis. He is 60 and has had it most of his life, although the last 4-5 years it has increased dramatically. It now affects his sleep, mood and sometimes his ADLs. He has been told there is no cure; which may be true, but is there any treatment available to at least reduce the symptoms? Also, he has tried taking Lipoflavanoids OTC. This seems to possible help, but the difference, if any, is not evident for several weeks. Thanks so much! Linda Johnson

Hello and welcome to 'Ask a Doctor' service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your complain it seems that ringing in ears can occur due to causes like ear infection, perforated eardrum, excess ear wax accumulation, eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, acoustic neuroma etc.

I would suggest you to consult an otolaryngologist and get evaluated. A thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like audiometry, x-ray, MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly. He can be advised medicines like Tricyclic anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised. White noise devices can be advised.

You can also be advised neuromodulation. Avoid exposure to very loud sounds and also avoid diving, swimming etc.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
