Suggest Medication To Increase Breast Milk Production

Doctor, my wife feels that her breast milk is not much. Although the baby is nursing quite well with normal intervals we feel that the baby should get more milk. The baby is 1 mnt old now. Since few days back, we started to give formula once a while along with breast milk. How to increase breast milk, is there any medicine for enhancing the productuion of breast milk?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi. I am a pediatrician. Welcome to Healthcare Magic. First i want to know about what is 'normal' breastfeeding. Breast feeds should be given once in 2-hourly intervals as and when child needs feeds (whichever is shorter). Once a child is properly breastfed, he or she will sleep for around 2 hours after each feeds, passes urine 6-8 times per day and will gain weight normally. (your baby must have gained atleast 600 g weight by now if adequately breast fed). If your baby has all these, i would feel that breastfeeding is adequate and there is nothing to worry about.
If not, i would advise your wife to take adequate water intake (atleast 12 glass water or 2.5 litres everyday) and she should take atleast 3 glass of milk per day. Ask her to take wheat, jeera, garlic and drumstick leaves as they increase the milk output naturally and also make the milk more nutritious. If still the milk output is less, i would suggest to take capsule lactare (2-2-2 for one week, then 1-1-1 for next 1 week) and galact granules, twice a day(along with milk) for 1 week.
Thank you.

thanks fot thequery
she should feed her baby as often as the baby demands and your wife can manage.
More a baby suckles the breast, more milk a mother has.
Your wife can try to express her left over milk after feeding the baby once a day as more a breast get empytied more the milk is produced.
Feed your baby at least after 2.5-3 hours even if the baby is sleeping.
Mother should take plenty of fluids (water/soup/milk/lassi/juices/coconut water etc) as even by not taking enough fluids , mother can have less milk.
Please ask her to take plenty of fruit s,vegetables besides of course a healthy and nutritious diet.
She should take plenty of rest and sleep.
Over anxiety has a bad effect on the milk production.
Cumin (Jeera) (2-3 tea spoon every day) is also helpful.
