Suggest Medication For Wounds On Infants

hi my question is not about me its a query about my nephew. he is twenty months old and on Tuesday afternoon he banged his chin on a wooden chair when attempting to climb onto it. on Tuesday there was a small cut and a small bruise (but a very black one) and I advised my sister in law to get him check out just in case but she wasn t able to. I saw him again today and his chin really worried me. it is quite swollen and the burise has become very large and is still as black. he is very wary of people going near it and seems to be struggling to eat. I was wondering if you could give me any advice?

Thank you for your query.

Am sorry that the little one is hurting.

Falls, cut, bruises and swelling are common in children especially as they are so engrossed with exploring the world around them

After a minor Injury, the affected area will swell and may bruise (if any capillaries were injured). This will initially I crease and reach its maximum size in a day (provided there is no additional trauma). The color of the bruise will vary depending on the site and extent of injury. This then reduces over the next week and the bruise will gradually change color and resolve.
Injury over a bony area (like the chin) , especially in toddlers, which leads to extensive swelling and bruising need to checked out right away. Their skeleton is not fully developed and injury may hinder proper development if it is significant.

I recommend seeing his pediatrician who could assess the severity of the injury.
Soft tissue (no bone involvement) can be treated with ice and anti inflammatory medications.
In the meantime, keep the wound clean and dry. Ice the area (wrap ice pack in thin cloth) regularly to reduce swelling.
Keep a close eye on him for the first 72 hours. If he seems too cranky, cries unstoppable, refuses to be held by mother, doesn't eat well, or is lethargic, take him to the ER to rule out head injury (due to impact on the face).

It is normal for him to vary of people going near his would because he expects to hurt. Try to make him understand by pretend play with his favorite stuffed toy. All they need is.compassion and gentleness.
Hope this helps.
