Dear Sir, My wife aged 37, weight 59kg, height 1.60m has been diagnosed by the doctor as having Typhoid. The Serology results: CRP 48 mg/L Typhi – O 1/320 Typhi – H 1/640 The Doctor prescribed her to take: CIPRO-DENK 500mg 1tablet 2Xs a day for 10 days and Metronidazole 500mg 1 tablet 2Xs a day for 4 days. Is the prescribed medicine and amounts sound correct to you? Thank you for your assistance. Peter
Hi & Welcome. I appreciate your concern for your beloved wife. Given together may increase the risk of arrhythmia hence should be avoided. Ciprofloxacin alone is sufficient enough to eradicate the typhoid infection. Metronidazole is NOT effective in the treatment of Salmonella infections like typhoid and hence not used. Since Ciprofloxacin is known to prolong the QT interval and thus increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmia in some patients, Metronidazole can also cause such problem hence given together they may cause additive effects and increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsade de pointes and sudden death.
Had I been her treating physician I would have prescribed Ciprofloxacin alone for 10 days.
