Suggest Medication For Osteoporosis Which Has Less Side Effects

Which of the bone building meds has the fewest adverse side effects? I took reclast and had a bad response. I took Boniva for years which probably weakened my bones. What is the current thinking about the best med to take? What about alternative approaches?

hello there and thanks for writing to HCM

I read your query and will surely help you out

following details would have really helped:
your age and sex?
whether you have any other medical or surgical or drug history?
what side effects did you experience with reclast and boniva?

coming to your query,
i would suggest you use bisphosphonates itself first.

Since you have experienced a bad response to two bisphosphonates that is reclast(zoledronate) and boniva(ibandronate),i would recommend you to take alendronate or risedronate (other bisphosphonates)orally

Try to take the tablet on empty stomach with a glass of water and wait for half an hour before having lying or having food.
this might help in relieving side effects stomach upset and heartburn a bit

If you are still intolerant to above drugs,i would recommend to ask your doctor for injections like teriparatide and/or denozumab with less side effects.

If you are a woman past her menopause,i would recommend taking hormonal preparation like raloxifene

i would also recommend you have a diet rich in calcium and vitamin-D and then take supplements if needed. Also do light exercises. And also quit smoking and alcohol

Though you cant completely reverse osteoporosis, all this will help you.

Hope i have clarified your query and hope it helps.
Followup if you have doubts. Take care and Good day
