Suggest Medication For Fever, Glassy Eyes And Shivering In A Toddler

My 2 year old grandson was lethargic this morning and then developed a fever. It came down after taking motrin at noon but it is right back at 102 now. His eyes are glassy, he was shaking, and just wants to be held. Should we continue giving him Motrin and wait for the fever to totally break or should we go to urgent care?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I really appreciate your concern for your grandson. Fever 102 and shivering is a matter of concern and in my opinion you should immediately consult a pediatric specialist or emergency care. Give him frequent feeds and sips of water, take care of dehydration and low glucose level, and keep a close watch if he develops seizure.

I would advise you for baseline investigation like CBC, liver function test, CRP, and ESR. You can give him cold sponging.

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to ask for further clarification, I will be happy to help you.

Best wishes,
Dr. B R Hudda
