Hi,My mother was having Fever & Dry cough . Medical test found infection too in blood. All that has resolved now. But her cough has not gone. Its more than 3 weeks. Chest X-ray came clear. Mostly her cough is dry but sometime wet too. She also feels very tired & weak. Now my 1.5 year old daughter is also having same symptoms. Fever has gone now but cough exists from more than 2 weeks. Thanks for your help.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your mother has sub-acute post-infectious cough and it is highly likely caused by upper airway cough syndrome (UACS). It usually follows respiratory infection and the cough is usually dry.
To manage UACS is to use oral first-generation antihistamine (e.g. Chlorpheniramine) combination with decongestant at least 3 weeks. This approach is considered both diagnostic and a treatment option. If she does not respond to the treatment, further investigation will be required such as pulmonary function tests, high resolution CT scan of the chest etc.

Some medications may also cause cough (e.g. ACE inhibitors) which should be excluded for your mother. Transmittable post-infectious cough may also be caused by B pertussis infection. Sudden burst of cough and vomiting after the cough are characteristics for the infection. But if your daughter and mother received the vaccine (DTP or Td), it is unlikely causing their symptoms.

Please, talk to your doctor for the prescription of oral first-generation antihistamine combination with decongestant to diagnose and treat UACS.

I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank You,
Malik Amonov MD
