Suggest Medication For Dark Discoloration Of Toe Nail After An Injury

I am mid 50 s, female, diabetic, but no problems with that. A week ago I was trimming hedges and kicked a landscape boulder hard. My big toe hurt. Now the skin beneath the base of the toe is black back more than a quarter inch, the nail is fully gray, and kind of puffed out over the black skin at the base of the nail but I don t see any infection. Is tender under the nail about 2/3 of the way up . Do I seek medical attention or just wait this out?

Hi there

From what you describe, it seems that you have developed a haematoma or blood clot under your nail from the trauma you experienced. You can definitely wait this out however if it is very painful, you can visit the doctor who can lift the nail and remove the clot . The nail does not seem to be infected by what you describe but since you are diabetic it would be best to have a doctor assess this to confirm this.

If you do decide to let the nail heal on its own, the nail will thicken and grow out eventually. If you want to ensure that the nail grows back in an aesthetically pleasing way, then I suggest you remove it by visiting your primary care doctor. If you do remove it, it can take up to 6 months to grow back. If your diabetes is controlled, this procedure is fairly simple with very low risk.

Hope this answers your question.
