Suggest Medication For Constipation

Hi, My 3 and a half year old daughter has suffered from constipation since about 5 weeks of age, she has been hospitilised in the last week and was given klean-prep for 19 hours to clean her out, She has been witholding her stools for the past 2 months due to anal fissures and in the last 2 weeks is holding her urine as well, she has had 3 urinary infections in the last 6 months, she has been on benefiber for the past year and her stools a soft but large due to the holding on.

My daughter has autism and global development delay and is non verbal. Is this urine holding part and parcel with the bowel problems?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Please follow next remedies. You may at times need to try a laxative such as Fleet Phospho-Soda, Milk of Magnesia, or glycerin suppositories. If there wont be improvement on these measures, you should consider doing diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy, anal sphincter manometry and food allergy testing.
- stop any medication being used for constipation for a week
- take Ispaghula husk
- increase warm water (at least 8 glass/day) intake
- do not drink water during and after meals
- eat small meals (rich in fiber)
- eat plenty of "fresh oranges" and "pear "
- avoid COLD milk and and AVOID junk food (NO burger, pizza-even if its veg.) altogether
- mix few drops of "lemon juice" in warm water. Drink on empty stomach, early in the morning, to aid in bowel movement
- avoid beverages/alcohol/soft drinks
- do some exercise (push-ups/squats etc) early in the morning
- avoid carbonated drinks
- take 2-3 spoon edible virgin olive oil in the morning

Wish you good and sound health.
