Suggest investigations for uncontrolled hypertension
my mother is a hypertensive patient currently taking the hypertension medication. recently her bp has been fluctuating from 140/85 to 220/12 in matter of hours. what tests should she do? the family physician is asking her to do CT scan, blood work, and etc. unfortunately, with no insurance, it is hard to get these done.. which one is most vital test that should be done first?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You should start with Renal Artery Angiography as Renal artery stenosis. This may happen as a complication of longstanding hypertension and elevates the blood pressure to these numbers especially on standing up. It is very common.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mario Aiad

My mother just turned 90 and we usually monitor her blood pressure 2 - 3 times a week. She is currently taking LOSARTAN/HCTZ 50 12.5 mg tables (generic for HYZAAR 50). All day today she has felt off . When I took her bp this evening it read 155 over 95. Second reading approx 45 minutes later read 168/98. What should we do now?

I have two questions for you, if you are able and willing t answer I will truly appreciate it. I m really scared of having a stroke, and my question is: Can you have a stroke with normal blood pressure? The second question is: Can the docs see a blood clot or anything irregularity with the brain and their vessels with a CT Scan with out contrast? Went to the ER with tingling in my head and burning in my thigh, and the doc said that the CT Scan came out normal. It still has me worried that I might have a clot, my blood pressure was normal a 120 over 70.
