Suggest Good Antidiabetic Medicine Without Side Effects

dear Dr., I am a 70 year old women suffering from diabetes type2 since august 2001, but I am allergic to antidiabetic medicines.whenever my doctor gives them to me I land up with excessive gas problem and profuse diarrhea day and night. alternative medicine suits me but is unable to give good glycemic control.last year I developed fecal incontinence and via uti the infection passed into my blood and I was treated in max hospital, Noida india.and he has started me on human insulin in 30/70 ratio. I am on wosulin these days. it gives me good glycemic control, but since the day I have started it( SINCE 21 JAN 2013)though outwardly I am putting on weight with insulin inwardly I have lost my health strength stamina and independence with day and night diarrhea. gradually I am losing the ability to digest food. the moment I eat food starts running in the digestive tract and after 2 hours diarrhea starts off and no medicine seems to have any effect. all my tests are normal even colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. hope you can suggest something. my name is asha khanna I am from india and my email id is YYYY@YYYY .i am extremely thankful to you for the same.may god bless you for answering me.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear Mrs Khanna,
Its good that your glycemic control is optimal. Metformin is known to cause diarhhoea as well and that's probably why you had abdominal distension (gas problem) and diarrhoea earlier.

Since you have diabetes for about 13 years its likely you could be having diabetic gastroparesis. I would suggest you to have a gastric motility study with scintigraphy. Other causes of diabetes also has to be taken into account. If you are on proton pump inhibitors (eg omeprazole, pantaprazole etc) it could cause diarrhoea. Likewise, since its been there for some time and you seem to be losing health you should also get a colonic biopsy done. Please get a stool routine examination also to rule out parasites.

Hope it helps.
