Suggest Dosage Of Prednisole For Cough

I am coughing for the past two months. A doctor prescribed me prednisole - 10mg for a fortnight. The cough decreased to a great extent. So I continued the tablet of 5mg, 3 times a day more than a month. Couple of days befor I came to know that Prednisle must not be consumed more than a week; and also the consumption must not be given up immediately. The dose should be reduced. Now I am taking Prednisole 5 mg, half a tablet, 3 times a day. Can you suggest me, how should I reduce the dossage further and how to stop the drug. And also I want to know any other precautions to be taken. VIJAYABASKAR.P

Hello,

You are absolutely correct, Prednisone is one of those medications that cannot simply by stopped abruptly until it is reduced to a certain dosage. Generally speaking, once you get to a dosage of about 5mg per day, you are free to simply stop it all together. Many physicians even will stop the Prednisone at a dosage of 10mg and there are no ill-effects.

So once you get to a total dose per day of 5 mg, go ahead and stop this. There are really no other precautions regarding the discontinuation, I think you will do great!

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
