Suggest Diet Plan For Type 2 Diabetes

My husband and I are both diabetics (Type 2) and we argue about how much he should be eating. He weighs about 300 lbs . and is confined to a wheel chair due to arthritic hips. Should he be limiting his intake of all foods? How much protein, carbs, roughage, Etc.?

Well, good morning to you! Welcome to HCM.

There is so much we could talk about! To answer your question, yes, weight loss is a cornerstone of diabetes management. Increased weight caused increased insulin RESISTANCE so even in having enough insulin it just doesn't work. Your insulin receptors are like worn tires on a car. Taking off the weight would be like putting new tires on that old car! Understand?

I highly recommend that both you and your husband make an appointment with a Dietitian who understands Diabetes (in the US we have CDEs or Certified Diabetic Educators of which I used to be one). Losing weight will also help your husbands mobility issues, the arthritic hips, the high level of pain, pressure sores???.

To calculate the information you want, I need age, height, current weight, achievable goal weight to determine calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat. Also helpful are other lab values, medication (for example insulin dose and types determine when you eat and metformin causes B12 deficiency).

So, I invite you to come back to my Direct Portal to do a individualized diet for your husband or seek out a dietitian on your own. I don't know your country or perhaps I could direct you to one. Regards, Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
