Suggest Cure For Headache And Bruise On Head After A Fall

My husband fell out of bed & hit the side if his head on the nightstand. There is bruising but not a great deal of swelling. He is able to walk, talk, & doesn t appear to be having any cognition problems. He complains of a headache. We applied ice to reduce any possible swelling & gave him acetomenephin for his headache. Should other measures be taken?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.
if your husband fell from the bed and the height is less than 1.5 m it is very unlikely he has serious head trauma. If he did not loose the consciousness after the trauma and has no vomiting, this is reassuring also.
As you explain he does not have neurologic signs and cognition is good so the headache can be caused by the local trauma of the structures and not necessarily due to serious causes.
You seem to be doing the right things with local ice, tylenol for pain.
You can also give him some advil if tylenol does not help enough.
Make sure he takes advil after food so it does not hurt his stomach.
If pain does not get better with the above measures or if he gets any worse or develops new symptoms you need to urgently see a doctor and have an evaluation and proper treatment plan.
Hope this is helpful and answers to your question
