Suggest Curable Treatment For Diabetes And Mastoiditis

My mom is suffering from diabetes mastoiditis for past 3 months and has been under injections followed by medicines for some time now and no cure is in sight. She is around 55 and has been diabetic for 30 yrs now. She also takes insulin morning and evening dailly. She is unable to sleep properly and takes painkillers. Without pain killers she gets up 2-3 times at night. Please tell me if this is curable completely. Can we do surgery as a last resort. PLease help ?

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal, MD.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

First and foremost, just taking insulin is not enough. You need to take sufficient insulin for it to be enough. The sugars have to be well controlled. The query is silent on the details, so I will request the details in your followup query.

Besides, the mastoiditis, an infection is going to take longer to heal if the sugars are not corrected. The high sugars are always one of the major cause for the infection to take more time for healing. Besides, the injections ( I presume antibiotics) need to be appropriate. From the given query, the details of treatment are unavailable. So I would like those details again, as well as any culture report, if done previously.

As for the surgery, the option is always open. But a conservative management is always more advisable.Correcting sugars and giving appropriate antibiotics for sufficiently long duration usually helps. Besides, with high sugars and presumed sepsis (spread of infection in the body), a surgeon may not prefer to operate on her.

May be a good idea to do a HbA1C as well and let us know the report in your follow up query.

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above/if any other so I can be of help further.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.

Please do understand that some details could be extracted from a detailed history and examination.

Please feel free to ask another query. I would be glad to help you. Looking forward to your return query with the details asked so that I can help you further.
(If the answer has helped you, please indicate this)
Best of luck.
