Suggest Course Of Treatment For Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

I was using fairly large doses of Tums and Gaviscon daily for about and week and then went to the emergency department of my local hospital this morning. I was diagnosed with GERD and prescribed 40 mg of Pantoprazole once daily. I was only at the hospital for about 4 hours and given IV to rehydrate and balance my electrolytes. I was also given 80 mg of Pantoprazole via IV once the lab test results were available to the presiding physician. He did say it might take a few days to build up in the system. Tonight I have again reached for Gaviscon, although I only needed a relatively moderate dose to take away the pain and discomfort. Do you know how long it might take for Pantoprazole to take full effect? And is 40 mg a small, medium, or large dose?

Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.

40mg once daily is a medium dose. You can take 2x40mg daily if necessary. GERD is caused by irritation of stomach mucosa by certain food or medications, stress and smoking. It should be treated by changing lifestyle habits first and in severe cases medications or surgery may be required. You need to avoid fried food, carbonated drinks, coffee, alcohol and spicy food. You should eat more milk products, vegetables and boiled food.
If there is no improvement you need to do gastroscopy and biopsy to rule out helicobacter infection.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
