Hi,I am Dr. Joan F. Tryzelaar (Cardiac Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have mytral valve prolapse so I'm aware of my heart more than most, I think. I notice when it skips beats, or beats fast or hard. Anyway, it's been beating harder than normal since yesterday afternoon. When do I hit the panic button and go to a hospital?
Usually mitral valve prolapse don't have that much complications. Mild mitral valve prolapse don't have complications at all. The main complication of mitral valve prolapse is mitral insufficiency and endocarditis. These can seen only in severe mitral valve prolapse and quite rarely. For prevention of endocarditis it is recommended to avoid bacterial infections and use prophylactic antibiotics before dental procedures. I don't think that your heartbeats are connected with mitral prolapse. Anyway if they are quite frequent I would advise you to see your cardiologist and undergo holter monitoring, this is a test that records your 24 hour ECG. So your doctor will see if you have anything serous.
Hope I could help you
Wishing you good health

mitral valve prolapse is essentially benign condition, but you have frequent palpitations so you should start propranolol 40 mg twice a day if not contraindicated due to other reason.this should control most of your symptoms,no need to rush to hospital, and ofcourse you must have yearly echocardiogram for assesment of regurgitation.you may continue propranolol for few weeks to months and may stop if u feel alright and may restart for short period if symptoms recur.
