Suggest Cause For Sore Throat With Swelling In Hives In Elderly
My grandfather is in his 70's and over the last few days he's developed a sore throat/swollen gland (on one side only), joint swelling and aches, and even hives. He's been taking IBuProfen but not sure if that's helping or hurting. Any idea what this could be?
Hi, I doubt all the symptoms could have occurred in the last few days. Joint swelling and aches in the elderly is usually due to osteoarthritis. Ibuprofen can be used to subside pain. Physiotherapy or passive exercise, and in periods of no pain, resistance exercise to strengthen muscles, with join support can be used. Sore throat could be due to open mouth breathing or snoring at night. This inflammation could have led to one side swollen gland. If there is associated fever, it could be pharyngitis and could require antibiotics. For sore throat he can use salt water gargling and lozenges. Hives are common in elderly due to skin thinning. Blood vessels can be easily made out. Hope this helps. Any further query, happy to help again. Dr. Prakash HM
