Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I'm 60; healthy wt 87 kg; I'm facing foot surgery described as "major" following an RTA;( reduction pinning fusing cuboid + 3 other bones); had BP taken in Hospt (tho I was apprehensive) it was160/84; a home kit i have for BP shoes average 129-138/ 80-86...depending on the time of day; are theses dependable readings? Is there an average BP for someone my age? Barry
Hello and thank you for using HCM. Normal blood pressure should be less than 140/90 in most people. If you have diabetes, heart or kidney disease your doctor may recommend a lower optimal pressure. Home blood pressure cuffs that fit over the upper arm are the most accurate. Those that go on the finger or wrist may not be reliable. You can take your blood pressure cuff with you to your next doctor's appointment and they can compare it to their readings for you. Regular exercise and avoiding salt, alcohol and tobacco are helpful in keeping blood pressures in normal range. If your blood pressures stay over 140/90 with a reliable blood pressure cuff then see your doctor right away.
