I have been prescribed Percocet 325/10 after finding out i have 3 collapsed did kin my lower neck. I have been taking 2 a day to manage the relentless pain my nerve endings have created mostly on the left side of my body. I am 55 years of age and have never taken pain Meds like this before. I have noticed several side affects and I m very concerned about becoming addicted to this medicine and all the health risk associated with this medicine. We did initial neck injection two weeks ago and my surgeon and I are planning a spinal epidural in the very near future. Please advise maybe a different medicine or educate me on the risk to my health like my liver, kidneys, or any other organs. I ve been taking this med for around 2 months now. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You are very right, excessive use of medicine may have many harms. Percocet contains oxycodone which is opioid, it should be used for minimum duration. However, if pain is severe as is yours then its use can be justified. Mostly these are safe drugs if taken with caution and on need basis. There is some risk of addiction however of needed that slight risk may be worth taking. So, if your pain can be controlled with non opioid like Paracetamol 2 tablets 3 times a day, plus ice packing or hot application then definitely this drugs is not needed and best be avoided. But if that don't work for you then it's use on need basis can be justified.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
