Suggest An Alternative Medication For Avelox To Treat Sinus Infection

Hi, I was just proscribed a 10 day course of Avolex after a 6 day course of Zithromx didn t clear up my sinus infection. However, I m horrified by the possible side effects from this medication and was wondering if there was something els that was as effective, but a little safer? Thanks!

Hello,

Welcome to Health Care Magic.

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Saddiq ul Abidin. I have read you question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

Judging by the kind of information you shared, it appears that you are in safe hands, and the doctor who is prescribing you meds is best at his work.

Azithromycin which you had received, along with other macrolides group of antibiotics has got very good upper respiratory tract coverage, however the bug which is troubling you appears to be resistant to it, and it happens quite often so you need not to worry. The other options would have been penicllin antibiotics, but since you are already encountered resistance to macrolides, so penicillins are less likely to respond, as they are most commonly used ones and have more resistance subsequently.

The other best option, which was available, is the one you are onto already, and that is a fluroquinolone antibiotic, with a better respiratory coverage, like levofloxacin, moxifloxacin etc. As far as safety profile is concerned, you can have allergies or intolerance to any kind of drugs, even with so commonly in use or with a better safety profile for general pouplation, as individuals behave differently. Along with nasuea, vomitings or mild gastric discomfort, if serious CNS side effects like tinnitis. vertigo, insomnias or deliriums don't appear or you don't experience any signs of anaphylaxis or allergies to it, there is no point switching Avelox ( Moxifloxacin). My recommendation would be to stick to the prescription. For more convenience, otherwise stop antibiotic for 3 days, if you can tolerate and get a culture of sputum if available and blood done to exactly find out the antibiotic most suitable and responsive to your infection.

Also that i would suggest you discus with your doctor regarding use of some decongestant, antihistamine and some antiiflammatory drug along it. That will give you symptomatic benefits.

I hope this answered your question. If you have more queries I am happy to answer. Otherwise rate and close the discussion
