Suggest Alternative Medication For Vertigo

My husband was diagnosed with vertigo, but nothing specific. He throws up daily, has problems walking, cannot get up by him self. He has fallen about fives times today and had to be driven home from work. His neurologist gave him Valium and the drug that is found in Dramamine. He was advised to take double the dose, it has not helped. Any suggestions? YYYY@YYYY Thank you, Kristine

Hello,

The symptoms of your husband as explained by you looks more like complication of vertigo. Acute vertigo is best treated with prescription medications like dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and meclizine (Bonine). You should give medicines only after clinical consultation with the treating doctor. Symptoms of vertigo that cause double vision, slurred speech, lack of muscle coordination, weakness / numbness or falls, are dangerous.

Get your husband clinically examined, get all required tests done to detect if he is suffering from Peripheral (BPPV, Meniere's disease) or central vertigo. Central vertigo is due to a problem (injury, tumor) in the brain, brain stem or the back part of the brain (cerebellum). Do not let him drive, he should be in bed rest. The treatment will depend on the pathology causing the symptoms and his clinical condition.

He may be treated with medicine (oral or intravenous) or surgery (if required). He may need physical therapy. It is effective. No worries, get him treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
