Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have been taking omeprazole for several months and have noticed hair loss and constant drainage in the back of my throat. I started investigating the causes of the drainage and found that it s a side effect of the omeprazole and then came across that it is a side effect of the hair loss too. Is there a medicine that I can take for a substitute for this? I hate this because it has helped my stomach problems so much

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Taking yourself omeprazole for long term should be avoided.Proton pump inhibitors - Omeprazole as well as esomeprazole is available over the counter. Another available option is ranitidine which is a h2 blocker also available over the counter suitable for gastritis. But these shouldn't be taken for long time without doctors advise. If you having gastritis for long term then consult a gstroenterologist to have a long term therapy with more better agents like rabeprazole or ilaprazole which doesn't have the side effects of omeprazole. You should also go on with a non irritating diet. Avoid excess spicy, excess fatty and greasy foods. Carbonated drinks , alcohol ,excess coffee and smoking should be avoided also. Checking B12 levels and iron profile will be helpful to rule out deficiencies which cause hair fall. In such case it should be substituted also. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
