Suggest Alternate For Clonazepam For Anxiety And Depression

Hello, I am 25 and a mother of 1 and soon to be 2 in a few days. I have suffered from generalized anxiety and depression for years. I have always been a worrier, but my anxiety has gotten to the point of being constant and it really puts a burden on my everyday life. I feel like I cant focus on anything but worrying, unless, I take anti anxiety meds. I have been on clonazepam prior to my pregnancy and I had a very difficult time getting it prescribed after my dr. moved practice to another state. I am suffering from depression and anxiety and I have a baby due in 4 days. I know I need an anti depressant as well which I have been on citalopram before and Lexapro and it really helped but not with my anxiety, which is severe. What is comparable to clonazepam besides Xanax, that is given more frequently to someone of my age and situation? All of this stemmed from ptsd from seeing a close friend killed and now I anticipate the worst of every situation and constantly worry about losing my close loved ones. What combination of medication could I take that would help if my obgyn is not willing to prescribe clonazepam after I have my baby. I do plan to breastfeed, but I m very concerned about my mental health.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us,

Apart from citalopram and escitalopram, there are other antidepressants that are used in anxiety like paroxetine and sertraline. They are not as effective as clonazepam in a short term. They do not give instant relief but take time, at least 2 weeks to start acting. They are beneficial in the long run. Some amount of the drug will be secreted in breast milk. The benefits and the risk of the drug will have to be discussed with a psychiatrist.

Hope this helps
