Suffering From Diarrhea, Diabetic, Lost Leg Below Knee, Blind, Had Numerous Strokes. Treatment?
I have a 58 year old son who has diabetes in its worse stage. He has lost a leg below the knee, is blind and has had numerous strokes. He is now suffering from diarrhea he describes as AWFUL. Nothing seems to help. He is about to quit eating and drinking because he thinks this might help. Can you give us any idea of what might give him some relief?
hi thanks for your question. Codeine phosphate, zinc tablet, a lot of I.V fliuds and flagyl can help however based on my experience I would first urgently admit patient in hospital, rehydrate with intravenous fluids, then do stool analysis and there after start anti diarrhea medication. He needs emergency treatment because diarrhea leads to dehydration that leads to death. Hope I answered your question, will be happy to help you, if you have other queries.
Loosing a leg and becoming blind and along with numerous strokes shows that he has both micro vascular and macro vascular complications. He might be having associated renal failure too. Since his complications needs to be address. 1. He is advised to add statins at appropriate doses at night times, you can discuss with your doctor. 2. Control blood pressure below 130/80 mm of hg. 3. sugar control should not be too tight as it might cause low sugars. 4. Try to avoid taking oral drugs and try to tupplement with insulins.
Hello, Diabetics have more chances of getting diarrhoea as compared to general population. While the causes can be like viral or bacterial infections or certain medical conditions like coeliac disease or IBS,it can be due to use of diabetic medications and most importantly due to diabetic neuropathy. Your history of losing leg and strokes suggest that patient has kept his diabetes highly uncontrolled and there must be various micro as well as macro vascular complications in him. This suggests that patient may be having diabetic neuropathic diarrhoea.
Treatment involves diagnosing the cause for it and then treating it accordingly. If it is due to diabetic neuropathy ,then it really becomes difficult. Short term treatment would require using loperamide and taking care of hydration and electrolyte imbalance, the long term treatment may involve medicines like... Catapress ( clonidine ) Antibiotics like tetracycline Somatostatin analogues like octreotide . Consult a diabetologist and a gastroenterologist for proper management. Thanks
