Suffering from constipation. Took milk of magnesia. No relief. what else to take?

I usually have regular bowel movements; however, I decided to go on the Dr. OZ 3 day cleanse. I am on my LAST day, and have found myself to be very constipated. I have already had the breakfast drink, and I took some milk of magnesia at 9:00.( 2 tablespoons) It still has not worked. should I finish with lunch or dinner or stop? This cleanse did not work for me and I followed it by the book!

Hello dear,

First of all, please do not take any medicine just by reading a book.
The dosage as well the duration of treatment is determined by a physician after a proper clinical examination.

The causes of constipation can be:
1. Functional cause- due to decreased gastric motility
2. Irritable bowel syndrome- constipation predominant type.
3. Less consumption of fiber rich foods
4. Less fluid intake
5. Prolonged use of certain medications.
6. Hormonal & Metabolic causes, etc.

So, kindly consult a Gastroenterologist & get a proper physical examination done.
Investigations like Ultrasound scan of abdomen, Colonoscopy & contrast studies will be helpful to rule out any pathology in the Gastrointestinal tract.

Till then, symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of Laxatives & stool softeners, but their regular use is not advised.
However, as long as the underlying cause is not treated, symptoms will keep recurring.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.

Wishing a good health.
Take care.
