Stomach Pain On Right Side, Fluid In Upper Right Quadrant. Causes And Cure?

my 14 year old son had started having stomach pains on the right side so we went to the er and they did blood, urine and ct scan test with contrast. they ruled out appendicitis and kidney stones and said it was a viral infection and sent him home. the next day the radioligy department called me and asked how he was doing and said he needs to follow up with his family doctor immediately because the radioligist looked at his results and he found that he has fluid in the upper right quadrant. i was wondering what this could be caused from?

Dear friend, welcome and thanks for entrusting your query here at HCM!
I am Dr. Prasad Akole (Critical Care Expert- http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole) and am glad to address to your query here.

Free fluid in the abdomen if more than minimal can be significant.
Was it free fluid or fluid within the bowel or gall bladder? Your description does not clarify it.
Fluid may collect from various causes- infective, perforation/ rupture of an organ like gall bladder/ bowel, or generalized disorder like low proteins or liver disease etc.
You need an actual in person examination by a physician to differentiate it.
So, yes the radiologist rightly asked you to see your doctor again.
Pl. keep me posted on what happens.

I hope you are fully satisfied with the guidance I gave.
I would be glad to answer any further queries. May I request you to rate your experience here before you close.
Thank you and Good luck!
