Started cold with whooping cough, phlegm. What is wrong?

Started a cold one month ago and coughed & gagged like whooping cough . Saw my doctor at the end of July.... checked me thoroughly and said to continue with the cough syrup and that it would take its course. I am still coughing with lots of phlegm coming up. Very annoying when you re working and have to leave to go and cough in the washroom. I easily choke on nuts , even drinking water sometimes. Is there something else doing on? Thank you.
