Soreness, Swelling Under Nail Of Right Thumb After Arm Injury. Treatment For Symptoms?

For the past two days my right thumb has been sore and swollen under the nail. At night the pain and swelling gets significantly worse making it difficult to sleep. I fell down the stairs 2 days ago and my entire right arm bent backwards... I don t remember any specific pain in my thumb after the fall though. Any ideas why this is happening? Thanks for your time!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello.
Thanks for posting your query.

From description it seems to be soft tissue injury or fracture at thumb.

You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.

I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.

Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid lifting and rest well.

Regards.
