Small Child, Vomiting, Diarrhea, Constipation. Taking Smecta, Dicyclomine. Treatment?

Hi.. My son is 2 years old and last week, he had vomiting and diarrhea . Took him to the doctor and the doctor gave him smecta which have now caused him to be constipated and have lots of wind in the tummy. The doctor has given him lactose and dicyclomine but he still has a lot of wind and is in pain. Please advise. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for using health care magic

You may want to discuss the use of dicyclomine with the doctor as this medication is a class of drugs called anticholinergics which can actually worsen constipation (it is one of its side effects) and cause bloating.
It may or may not be contributing to his symptoms.
In addition, you may want to try giving him something warm to drink such as ginger tea (it is ok to use at his age), this may help ease his discomfort.
You can also consider giving him medication to reduce the pain such as paracetamol, avoid advil as this can worsen the bloating.
The use of warm milk products may also be beneficial to him.
If the symptoms continue or worsen, your doctor may consider using the pediatric reflux medication.

In some persons after a bout of diarrhoea, there may be a decrease in the frequency of stools below what would normally occur..

hope this helps and your son feels better soon

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
your son is having gastroenteritis and this is mostly viral in origin.it will take its course of few days.
most important thing is to maintain proper hydration.i advise you to give oral rehydration solution small amounts frequently, also give coconut water, lemon water.curd.banana.
In case his symptoms get worse take him to pediatrician.
your son will be fine

Hi
As your child is having constipation you can give plenty of oral fluids, dietary fiber rich food like vegetables, fruits and this will help to make stool soft and easy defecation . If still hard stools are there you can continue lactulose syrup in prescribed dosage till motion becomes soft.

hello melissajillian, you should take drops dill oil plus fennel oil with simethicone combination and give him 1.5 ml thrice daily for contipation and gas.
