Small Child, Loose Motions, Frequent Stools. Prescribed Zinconia, Econorm Sachets. Cure?

Hi, my son has been having increased frequency of bowel movement(loose motion) over the last 3 days - my paed suggested Zinconia (once a day) and Econorm sachets (1/4th, twice a day) and said that the increased frequency will continue for 3/4 days. This is the 3rd day and the frequency has not come down, is this ok or should I do anything / get worried?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
diarrhea is usually viral in origin, and it takes few days for it to get settled, continue medication as advised by your pediatrician,I suggest you to give oral rehydration solution sip by sip after every loose stool.also give water, coconut water, banana, boiled potato, curd.
In case symptoms do not settle down or child is lethargic.then you should take him to doctor again.
Your son will be well soon
God bless

Hi
Was there any fever? Any foul smelling of stool? Was stool associate with mucus or blood?
If thes are present it is suggestive of infectoius mostly bacterial diarrhea and reuires antibiotic therapy to control loose stools.
Nothing to worry until hydration and oral intake, and child activity is good.
Give oral rehydrating solutions sips by sips in equal amounts to the losses of fluid in stool to prevent dehydration and continue zinconia and econorm sachet one sachet per day and stool can be given culture and sensitivity to find out the organism and its response to suitable antibiotic.

Hope your child recover soon.

Hello
Your physician has said well. It usually takes 4-5 days may be more up to 14 days for bowel to become regular. But if it persists for more than 14 days then its chronic diarrhea or persistent diarrhea and then it should be investigated to find the cause. Improvement can be assessed by change in consistency or frequency of stool.
Main aim of diarrhea treatment is to prevent dehydration by giving plenty of fluid. So give him plenty of fluid and watch for lethargy, decreased urinary frequency or decreased oral intake. If you notice any of these consult your doctor immediately.
Continue giving zinconia (as it helps in early recovery) and econorm ( it replace the normal gut flora lost in diarrhea).
Regards
