Small Child, Breastfed, Needs Mothers Milk Every Hour. What Alternate Foods Can Be Given?

Hi, My boy is 3 months old now. He has to be feeded every hour or hour and half and feeds for half an hour +. My wife will need to join her work from mid this month and we may not be able to store that much milk till she comes back. In this case what intakes must be started for the baby. I would appreciate if you can give some alternatives.

Hi ,
Thank you for your query.
Breast milk is the best milk for the baby.
Breast milk banking can be done.
Breast milk can be kept for 8 hrs at room temperature and for 24 hrs if refrigerated.
If that is not sufficient supplemental tinned milk can be given.
Consult your doctor if the problem persists.
If you have any further queries you are free to consult me.
Hope this answers your query.
Wishing a speedy recovery.
Have a nice day.

Hi,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.

I suggest you and request you not to start on any other alternatives.
Please continue to breast feed.
That is good for your baby.
It helps in his brain development and protects against infections
There are several other advantages of breast feeding.

If your wife is working she can very well express the milk and store it.
Using a refrigerator you can store the milk till she comes back.
There is nothing like milk is not sufficient.
Only motivation is required.
If a mother thinks of her baby lovingly milk will definitely come and will be enough for the baby.
More the baby suckles at the breast more the milk.
Please do not try any thing else.
A breast pump may help to express the milk.

Hi,
The child grows best if he is exclusively breast fed for 6mths. If not then be prepared that the baby may have problems in the form getting unwell .This is because preparing top feeds and ensuring that the sterilization of bottle is a difficult task.So the best policy is to extend the maternity leave or become part time or shift to a place closer to the job area or make facilities of taking the baby to the mother. In case all these cannot be done and joining is a must then store the mothers milk in fridge ,label them carefully as to the older collection is fed first .it can be warmed in a vessel kept in hot water .if this is not enough then top feeds in between can be given till mother comes home back.try to give the top feeds by spoon rather than bottle.Infant milk substitute is easily available ask your babies pediatrician which would be best for your child. But avoid giving cow or buffaloes milk at this stage. Also encourage mother to express at work place and keep the collection in fridge at work place for continuation of lactation.

bye
take care.

Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic,
Exclusive breastfeeding is the best method to feed your baby and alternate is expressed breast milk.
But as you mentioned the expressed milk will not sufficient to feed your baby in the absence of mother, the another alternate is to give formula milk.
But formula milk to be given with proper reconstitution.
Hygenic preparation is important.
Formula feeds to be given by a spoon or katori.
Don't feed with a bottle.
Hope I have answered your query.
