Small Child, Born With HIV Positive Status, Cough, Restlessness At Night. Mother Has HIV. Treatment?
The small child under investigation here was born to an HIV+ve mother in Los Angeles, but both are now resident with relatives in London. He has had a difficult first year of life, having also been diagnosed as HIV+ve soon after birth. His mother brought him to Casualty because of her concern with his cough and unwillingness to settle at night. At Casualty, his temperature was measured at 38.5oC and he was admitted for further investigations.

Hi,
The care of an HIV infected baby is different from the routine newborn care. I hope the baby has received zidovudine prophylaxis for the first six weeks of life.
P. carinii pneumonia prophylaxis, starting at six weeks of age, has to be given too. This infection occurs most often in infants than adults. Make sure this is given to the baby too.
Please get a mantoux test and a chest radiograph done for the baby as a screening measure for Tuberculosis.
The child make require Bactrim oral suspension on a three times a week basis on three consecutive days.
I hope things will be better soon and wish the child a speedy recovery.

These patients should be given same treatment may be with more dose and supportive drugs.
Advise both mother and child to use medicines for HIV through out life to prevent infections
and exacerbations. advise both of them to have balanced diet rich in antioxidents and proteins
like green leafy vegetables pulses sprouts fruits and juices. Thank you.
