Are CMIA And RNA PCR Test Results Conclusive?

Sir/Madam I have unprotected sex with my girlfriend for 75-80 times. Our last unprotected sex is on 26th November 2017. Recently my girlfriend tested HIV positive she got it from her ex- boyfriend who died on 2014 because of AIDS. My girlfriend started medication now. I did RNA PCR test on 15 days of last unprotected sex and it is negative. Again I did antibody/antigent (p24) CMIA test on 30 days of last unprotected sex and it is negative. Now what I want to know is that these two test can be treated conclusive and treated I am infection free. Do I need further test? Thanks. TTS

Hi,

You are free from HIV 1 infection as per the negative HIV RNA PCR on 15th day and the negative HIV 4th generation CMIA test. Antigen detecting test are specific only to HIV 1 antigen and not able to detect HIV 2 infection.

Antibody taking this test can detect both. Antibodies will appear only after the window period. At the same time, prevalence of HIV 2 infection in the world other than certain pockets of Africa is very low, less than 0.5%.

So nothing to worry. Anyhow I recommend you to have one more CMIA test 12 weeks after the last exposure and rule out the least possibility of HIV 2 also.

If you want to rule out HIV before that than investigate with confirmatory test that is western blot testing for HIV.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Your molecular test as well as CMIA test both are negative. So the chance of getting HIV very less.

But as your partner was HIV positive, don't take a risk and I will advise to retest again by CMIA combo test or by fourth generation ELISA after 3 months of exposure.

If you want to rule out HIV before that than investigate with confirmatory test that is western blot testing for HIV.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
