Shrunk Ovaries, Perimenopausal Symptoms, Adrenal Insufficiency. Using Transdermal Bi-estrogen. Will My Ovaries Recover?

I am a 52-year old female. I had a normal GYN visit two years ago. This year, I m told my ovaries have shrunken pretty fast. I ve been using a bioidentical, transdermal bi-estrogen at a pretty high level for a couple of years. The dose is like a replacement dose 1.2 mg/1.2 mg because I had severe perimenopausal symptoms and probably some adrenal insufficiency. My estrogen Rx is now much lower: .5 mg/.5 mg. I am afraid I have caused my ovaries to atrophy, and I wonder if there is hope they can recover a bit after lowering my estrogen use. It s always better to have your own organs do the work rather than an Rx, which is why I am hopeful. My menopausal symptoms are not as dramatic as they used to be, and my energy is better, so I don t feel as much need for so much estrogen, maybe my body is healthier and I just wonder if my ovaries could possibly recover a bit to carry me through my post menopausal years.

Hello ma'am and welcome.

Well your thinking is quite right, the high dependence on the hormone replacement may have reduced the load on your ovaries causing them to atrophy, you could try lowering the dose for a while, to a level which you are most comfortable with and at which you do not experience any menopausal symptoms.

If this does help your ovaries to recover then good, but this may take some time. If it does not, then it is best to get back on a regular dose of your supplements.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.
