Should the ER be visited for soreness and swelling on the legs after an injury?

Hello! I injured my knee and have been wearing a brace and using crutches per the orthopedic dr’s recommendation... today my calf on the injured leg started hurting and is a bit swollen. The dr said to go to the ER if it got swollen and red (I had a pulmonary embolism a few months ago).... It’s now sore and swollen, but not red or warm... and it’s the weekend, so I can’t call! Do I go to the ER to make sure it’s not another clot, or am I overreacting?

Hi,

The pain you are feeling today on the injured leg is not a good sign. It is indicating there is a possibility of clotting especially if it is swollen. As you have a recent history of pulmonary embolism (a few month ago), I highly recommend to go to ER and run Doppler ultrasound of the leg immediately to rule out any possible complication like clotting. Meanwhile, keep your leg well raised and follow your orthopedic doctor's advice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I recently had knee surgery, I just fell down about 8 stairs after my knee dislocated. I landed hard on my back/ bum. I now have a very bad headache and can barely move my leg. It is possible I may have a concussion? Should I go to the er or can it wait until tomorrow to see a clinic dr?

Hi, I fell this morning, landing on my knees, I hit my right one just below the knee cap at the top of my tibia. I immediately felt dizzy and vomited, I hobbled to the sofa and raised my legs until I felt less dizzy. When I looked at my knee, there was an immediate localised swelling just below my knee, I have since developed pain in the inside of my calf and above my knee, also the lump is somewhat warm. I can walk on it but it is sore to fully bend it. I had surgery on this knee, 2 years ago, to remove a growth in the tendon and I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome Type 3. Should I go to my nearest emergency dept or see my doctor next week?

I fell on May 18th and hurt my leg/hip and a hematoma about the size of a softball resulted. I went to the ER and was x-rayed and CT scanned and no break was found. I have been using ice-packs and some of the swelling has gone down but it is still extremely sore. I am very bruised, but that is fading. Should I follow up again with the attending ER doctor or is it just one of those things that takes time to heal. I am 83 yrs and my daughter keeps telling me that it takes longer due to my age, is this true ?
