Should I Take Suprep Or Laxative For Gastric Retention??

I have problems with gastric retention. Should I take Suprep? It lists gastric retention as one of the side effects. I have tried many other preps and have had the same problem. Have had to cancel a couple of colonoscopies. Should I just go the laxative/enema route?

Hello dear,

Suprep contains sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate & magnesium sulfate, which acts as a laxative.
But the effect is only a temporary one.
Long term usage can cause side effects like abdominal cramps, diarrhea and electrolyte disturbances.

So, it will be better to consult a Gastroenterologist for a proper clinical examination to rule out the causes of constipation, like:
1. Any pathology/ sub acute obstruction in the Gastrointestinal tract.
2. Irritable bowel syndrome- constipation predominant type.
3. Functional cause- due to decreased gastric motility.
4. Inadequate intake of fluids and fiber rich diet.
5. Hormonal & Metabolic causes, etc.

Though symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of laxatives, the underlying cause needs to be treated.
Investigations like complete blood count, stool examination, Ultrasound scan of abdomen, Colonoscopy & contrast studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for your symptoms.

Till then, maintain adequate hydration & proper nutrition status.
Wishing a good health.
Take care.
