HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Trauma to the chest can cause soft tissue injury or fracture to the sternum or ribs.
Soft tissue injury would refer to damage to muscles, ligaments , tendons and connective tissue.

Both types of injury would cause chest pain which may be aggravated by breathing. Fracture may be accompanied by shortness of breath.
He may want to consider the use of an anti inflammatory pain medication such as ibuprofen, naproxen, cataflam. If after 24 to 48 hours there is no response then he should visit his doctor for assessment.

I hope this helps
