Should I Be Worried About Increased Cholesterol Levels?

I am 53 year old female and just had a blood test for cholesterol and glucose levels. My cholesterol was 218, LDL was 138, HDL was 57, Trig. was 115, and glucose was 100. Should I be worried about these levels? They said to eat a low cholesterol diet and that would help.

Your cholesterol is borderline high. You need to nip the problem in the bud by eating healthy and being active. It is just a warning sign and indicates that you must focus on leading a healthier life. It is true that a low fat low cholesterol diet will be helpful in bringing down your cholesterol. Have a diet that is rich in fibre as it helps in lowering cholesterol. Foods such as oats, oat bran, vegetables as raw salads, whole fruits like apples, guava, citrus fruits, melons etc whole grain cereals like whole wheat products, bran containing foods and brown rice, are good sources of fibre in the diet.
Cut down on your fat intake as not only cholesterol rich foods like red meat, organ meats and eggyolk raise cholesterol in blood but more importantly the total amount of fats in your diet including how much oil you use for cooking. Avoid butter, margarine, milk cream. Use low fat milk, curd and cheese. If non-vegetarian use lean cuts of meat, chicken without skin, fish and eggwhites.
Avoid rich gravies and curries with lots of oil. Use not more than 3-4 tsp of oil in cooking per person per day. Reduce fat intake by limiting intake of bakery items like cakes, pastries, fried foods, packaged foods, savouries and heavy sweets.

Try to stay active throughout the day and if possible brisk walk for 30-45 minutes a day atleast 5 times a week.

Hope these suggestions will help you to lower cholesterol and stay healthy. Take care.
