Should I Be Concerned About Orange Pee During Pregnancy?

I just had the stomach flu two days ago on Saturday. I am three weeks from delivering a baby. On Sunday I started eating normally. I just went to the washroom and my pee was orange brown. Should I be concerned? (30 years old, 5'8", 185 lbs (gained 30 lbs so far), generally healthy.)

Hello, and I hope I can answer your question.

The color of your urine depends on how much water you drink and what you eat. If you have been sick for a few days, I am sure you are dehydrated from water loss in vomit and/or diarrhea and that can make your urine dark yellow to brown. In addition, if you do not eat for a while, your body starts to break down body fat and glucose stores, which can produce ketones (a by-product of metabolism) that can make your urine the color of tea.

You probably are just very dehydrated and have not eaten well for a while and that is making your urine dark. Drink LOTS of water mixed with a little juice- you need the sugar... at least 8 glasses a day. Your urine should get lighter and yellow on its own once you start urinating more. Eat bland, starchy food (rice, bread) and lean meat (if you eat meat) in small frequent meals. Electrolyte drinks (like Gatorade) are also good.

If your urine does not get lighter in a day or two, I suggest you see your OB for evaluation. And also if you develop any symptoms like severe swelling, headaches, or pain on your upper right abdomen, you should see your OB right away.

I hope I adequately answered your question and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy, Dr. Brown
