Hello and thank you for asking HCM.

I have read the symptoms that you have written and i will answer at your question.

There are a few reasons for a person to vomit blood:
-gastro-duodenal ulcer
-gastric cancer
-polip of stomach
-erosion of the lining of the esophagus or stomach
-vascular malfunctions of the gastrointestinal tract such as bleeding gastric varices
-gastritis
-tumors of the stomach or esophagus.

One of the best ways to determine the reason is doing an upper GI endoscopy and if needed the doctor doing this procedure can also do a biopsy if there is any lesion in the stomach/esophagus.

Also, due to the blood loss, your friend needs to do a blood test to see if he has anemia or not. Depending from the results of the upper GI endoscopy he might need to do an ultrasound of the abdomen,CT Scan ect.

If you have any other question, feel free to contact me.
