Should Coconut Water Be Avoided When Suffering From Cardiomyopathy?

Hello, I have suffered cardiomyopathy as a result of Herceptin use for breast cancer. My cardiologist advised Candesartan 16mg/day as one of my treatments and suggested I avoid potassium However, I occasionally drink coconut water which I have discovered contains Potassium. Should I avoid the coconut water? Thank you for your opinion.Nean Miller

Hi
Candesartan is a drug belong to angiotensin II receptor blockers(ARBs) mainly used to treat hypertension etc. ARBs can increase concentration of potassium in the blood. So your doctor advised you to avoid potassium.
Coconut water is a rich source of potassium. As coconut water contains potassium it should be avoided when you are on candesartan.Otherwise there is a danger of hyperkalemia which may cause cardiac arrhythmias.
Hope this answers your query.
