Should an antibiotic be taken for an infected toe?

I have an infected large toe. It has been so for about a week, I ve used triple antibiotic salve for the past three days, it has improved slightly. It does not cause me to limp, it is sore, showing an area at the end of the toe, the tip that is red and tender. Otherwise, it is not very painful. I seem to have an ache in my leg, mild. Should I be taking an antibiotic? YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your description there is no active infection persist. No pus collection either. Oral antibiotics are not indicated at this stage. You can apply topical antibiotic ointments like Neosporin or Mupirocin after cleaning with soap and water.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I m on antibiotics for a toe infection on the top of my toe. The open wound is clearing up but there are still signs of pus. My worry is the toe is still swollen and bright red. Should I just keep taking the antibiotics until they are done or should I do something else at this point?

Hi. I ve had an infected middle toe for several weeks now and have been put on 4 antibiotics: Keflex, Augmentin, Bitram, and now Doxycycline. There s no pus or anything at the nail bed, just the tip of the toe is still red and swollen. And just last night, it started hurting a little again. I m a 31-year-old female. 5 7 and 170 lbs. I have also been putting a prescription antibiotic cream on it and soaking it in Epsom salts every so often. I keep it covered with socks during the days and sometimes with loose-fitting socks at night and have been wearing loose-fitting, close-toed shoes. I keep it elevated as often as I can (the work day can be hard). Is there anything else I can do??? Should I be worried that it s taking so long to heal and is hurting a little bit again? Thanks!

I have had a yeast infection for over a year after taking heavy duty antibiotics. Have taken diflucan for over a year. Stopped taking it 7 weeks ago, seems to have subsided but now my big toe is yellow & sore. Has it traveled there now? Would using fucidin cream on the nail help or hinder?
