Should A Diabetic Go For Medication To Reduce Cholesterol?

My endocrinologist says that my cholesterol level is good for a normal person, but the AMA recommends that a diabetic, which I am, in my range should go on a statin. I did look into the statins and there are quite a few side effects AND I don t believe the AMA is always right. My GP says that cholesterol levels are genetic and I won t be able to bring mine down any lower without taking the medicine. Thoughts on that?

Even though your cholesterol levels are normal, being a diabetic you have to keep your cholesterol level as low as possible, especially if you are having other risk factors for heart attack such as hypertension, obesity, smoking and alcohol. Statins are being used for more than 20 years and their safety has been well established. Nowadays statins have became important drugs for prevention of heart attack. Hence your endocrinologist is probably right. Statins not only reduce the cholesterol level but they have other properties which are helpful in preventing heart attack.
