Should Valparin Be Continued For Convulsions In A Child?
My daughter was 6 years for the 1st time suffered from convulsion last week on thursday 22/7/10.As suggested by her child speciliasit we took out EEG ;which seemed very good & normal.& also the Valparin 200 medicine is started.Would like to know why is the medicine continued if the reports are normal & also it is aksed to be continued for 3 months. Are there any side effects.Pls.suggest.
How is her overall development- any delay in milestones? Any significant illness in the past? Any precipitating factors like fever or diarrhea before the convulsion? Was neuro imaging (CT or MRI scanning) done? Any family history of convulsions?
The decision regarding continuing anti epileptic depends on many factors, including any precipitating event, results of serum electrolytes and any neurological findings at presentation. If it was an unprovoked seizure with normal neurological examination and investigations, I would prefer not to start drugs now. Kindly get back with details or discuss with your doctor
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
